Introduction

The art of intuitively accessing information in ways that expand the boundaries of ordinary reality has been labeled the world’s “second oldest profession.”  People exercising this ability have been variously called oracles, shamen, seers, clairvoyants, mediums, psychics or simply intuitive consultants. Some cultures have bestowed upom them positions of power and authority.  In others they have been relegated to the fringes of social relevance.  As a group, they have never been far from controversy.  For if knowledge is power, then “inside” knowledge can be perceived in ways that, however disguised, raise issues of fear.

Today’s psychics have come a long way.  But the road has seldom been easy.  In the days of Imperial Rome, the Senate once required that no law could be passed until the official oracles had been consulted.  But, being an “oracle” in Salem, Massachusetts, was a sure way to find oneself on trial for practicing witchcraft.

Great minds have often expressed a strong interest in psychic practices, among them Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton, Immanuel Kant, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, William James and Carl Jung.  But they were often politely ignored when their interests in such matters became too intrusive.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore such interests. Across America and abroad, in research laboratories, university classrooms, select government circles, private homes and professional offices, understanding and accessing the higher reaches of intuition is becoming a primary agenda item.  Recent polls have put interest and/or believe in some form of psychic ability or phenomena at well over 50 percent of the population.  At least 25 percent feel that they have directly experienced psychic phenomena themselves.  And many of those have enrolled in classes for the development of one or more psychic abilities.

In film, television and literature, the exercise of some type of “gift” is often de rigueur.  In some circles, lack of familiarity with at least a few forms of psychic ability is a liability. Finally, we are faced with the fact that more and more people are visiting psychics or using them as adjuncts in their professional careers.

Against this background, Selecting Your Psychic has taken shape.  We are aware of the fact that the term “psychic” has been made to bear such a mélange of different meanings that controversy is never far away and clarity about the subject seems a distant ideal. Psychic can mean one who sees your future, one who assists with personal growth issues, one who talks to the  dead, strange person or simply one who is in touch with his or her own developed intuition.

In certain cases, we take clear stands on issues.  But for the most part, we have tried to steer a middle course between extreme interpretations.  If there is an overall message, it is that most persons possess psychic ability to some degree, that psychics are usually reasonable, down to earth people dealing with the same issues in life that all of us do and, finally, that psychics are progressively evolving into an accepted profession with increasing ties to mainstream culture.

In view of this evolution and of the increasing numbers of peole who consult psychics, Selecting Your Psychic is a practical guide to the broad topic of the intuitive reading. Indeed there room for a number of books on the topic, each developing much needed perspective.  Specifically, there are many questions which arise time and again both for the first-time visitor and for the old hand.  How have psychics fit or failed into culture?  What are the multiple purposes of a psychic reading?  What is a clear hit?  What about free will and the future?  What do skeptics say about psychic phenomena?  How can you select a good psychic?  What about psychic or spiritual healing? We have attempted to answer these questions and many others.

There are several explanations of why we are hearing so much about psychic phenomena these days.  The New Testament suggests that such a rising tide is one of the precursors of the Second Coming. Some social scientists have observed that the times of great change, which surely we live in, people tend to turn to sources of information and advice that they otherwise would not consult.  The skeptically oriented Committee for Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal views the entire field as reflecting a “cult of irrationality.”  A few anthropologists and neuroscientists have suggested that we are in the early stages of a great evolutionary leap, learning to use parts of our mind/brain that previously were unactualized.  Metaphysicians have urged that we are growing into a greater resonance with higher, interpenetrating levels of reality that have surrounded us all along.

Whatever the ultimate explanation for this rising tide of exploration may be, we have chosen to deal more with the practical interface of readings and their clients, that is, with the types of questions that are likely to surface in consultations.  To be sure, we have injected a certain amount of theory into the discussion, especially in Chapter Seven.  But for the most part, we are not concerned with such issues as whether ESP really exists, or how it is possible at all.  Rather, we assume as our point of departure that psychic consultation, whether in business, health, crime resolution, or personal growth, is growing and for the most part is a legitimate phenomenon.

We wish to stress that many of our observations are universally shared by those who work in the field.  But then universal agreement is hard to come by in many fields.

We hope that you will view our observations as guides, not as claims upon absolute truth, and that in all cases you will honor your own highest guidance in sorting th rough any questions you might have.  At the least, we hope to have mapped some of the territory in ways that will stimulate reflection and exploration.
